As it turned out, Wall Street's Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz drew the ace card when it came to counseling the bank through what analysts are calling the year's second-largest deal: the cash and stock acquisition of Golden West by Wachovia. Wachtell handled the $24.2 billion deal with six lawyers in six days.

Guilty People Can Sue Their Attorneys Too

On Wednesday, Los Angeles' Second District Court of Appeal held that criminal defendants need not allege actual innocence to state a cause of action for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty or fraud. The ruling, however, does not change state law prohibiting legal malpractice suits by criminal defendants unless they can allege actual innocence.
