Lewis Brisbois Expands in New York

A group of 16 lawyers, including insurance defense litigator Gregory S. Katz, have joined Lewis Brisbois' growing New York office. Katz, the former deputy managing partner of Wilson Elser's New York office, joins Lewis Brisbois as a partner in the general liability practice group. With the additions, Lewis Brisbois now has more than 75 lawyers in the New York office, which opened eight years ago.

Lewis Brisbois has failed to convince a California appeals court to throw out a $13 million legal malpractice case brought by former client Kmart. The court affirmed a trial judge who denied the law firm's bid to strike the retailer's action under a California law that prohibits so-called strategic lawsuits against public participation. The "anti-SLAPP" statute forbids lawsuits intended to curb someone's legally protected rights. The panel held that the law did not apply to the allegations Kmart made against the law firm.
