Texas Firms Gearing Up for Anticipated Litigation in Wall Street Meltdown
Some high-profile Texas plaintiffs lawyers with offices in New York are gearing up to take on business in wake of the financial debacle taking place on Wall Street. "I don't know where this is going to lead, but we are ready in case this leads somewhere," says Stephen Susman, founder of Susman Godfrey.In a controversial e-mail, the Susman partner advised her client that they'd have to think about whether to tell the other side about a piece of illegal software the client had found in its computer system. The failure to disclose led to a sanctions motion--but then it turned out that Susman's client had, in fact, disclosed the troublesome software! The judge called the facts mind-boggling but hit Susman for $10,000 anyway.

An analysis by Texas Lawyer, based on lawyer counts as of Jan. 1 at the 100 largest firms in the state, shows that 10 Texas-based firms now have 21 percent or more of their attorneys in offices outside the state. Dallas-based Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld — with 14 offices and 1,023 lawyers — leads the pack with 71 percent of its lawyers outside of Texas.
