Lobbying stalls generic drug legislation

Legislation aimed at speeding the availability of cheaper generic drugs has stalled in Congress in the face of major lobbying by the drug industry. The Senate bill would ban most settlements known as "reverse payments," in which a brand-name company pays a generic manufacturer to delay the introduction of the generic drug. The Federal Trade Commission has called on Congress to take action. Two federal court rulings finding reverse payments legal have made it more difficult for the FTC to block them.

As part of its plans to further develop its intellectual practice department, 370-attorney Frost Brown Todd has acquired three attorneys from a megafirm. Jones Day partner Joseph Dreitler will chair the trademark and copyright practice group. Joining him are colleagues Mary True and Brian Downey. Steven Goldstein, the chairman of Frost Brown Todd's IP department, said the firm expects to continue growing its intellectual property practice and to "expand the department to other offices in the firm."
