N.J. Division of Law Position Provides Low Pay, but You Play

Working as a New Jersey deputy attorney general doesn't pay much -- $55,945, compared with six figures in the private sector -- but the benefits are terrific. The intangible benefits, that is. Perhaps that's why starting salaries at New Jersey's largest firms stayed flat from 2002 to 2003. The glut has even led one major firm to cancel this year's summer program -- laterals will be its next hires.

Estate Work by Out-of-State Lawyers Called Unauthorized Practice of Law

Out-of-state attorneys are being reminded they could get in trouble if they work on New Jersey estates. A New Jersey Supreme Court committee opinion says only two narrow exceptions permit the hiring of a non-New Jersey lawyer for such work. It's not clear, however, if the opinion's protectionist interpretation will survive if the state high court adopts a multijurisdictional practice proposal bubbling up in the ABA.
