A Canadian engineer who claims he was sent by the United States to Syria to be tortured in 2002 cannot sue U.S. officials in federal court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said yesterday in an in banc ruling. The 7-4 majority held that Maher Arar failed to state a claim under the Torture Victim Protection Act and that his remaining claims did not satisfy the test for "implied" constitutional causes of action.It's not easy to put a positive spin on getting hit with the largest criminal penalty in U.S. history and having to shell out $2.3 billion. At least the record-breaking settlement "wiped the slate clean" for Pfizer, one of the drugmaker's lawyers said.
Corus GC Quits for Role at Building Company
Steel giant Corus has lost its general counsel, Richard Shoylekov, to U.K. building supply distributor Wolseley. At Wolseley, Shoylekov replaces interim general counsel Charles Watters, who temporarily took the role after Mark White left the company earlier this year to join food services giant Compass Group.
