Texas-Based Firms' Lone Star Offices Unmoved in Current Round of Pay Hikes

Associates at large Texas-based firms may be left out of the recent associate salary raises for a while. Some firms such as Houston-based Susman Godfrey say they upped starting salaries to stay competitive with other firms. But other large Texas firms aren't feeling pressure. "I think most observers would differentiate the Texas market from both coasts ... and so far I'm seeing no signs of any movement here," says Kenneth Menges, a partner at Akin Gump, which isn't currently considering associate raises.

Wal-Mart Loses $6.5 Million Wage-and-Hour Class Action

Wal-Mart and lead trial counsel Susman Godfrey are 0-for-3 in wage-and-hour class action trials. Tuesday, after a three-month bench trial, a Minnesota judge ruled that in failing to provide rest breaks, Wal-Mart broke state labor laws more than 2 million times. Judge Robert King Jr. awarded $6.5 million in compensatory damages to the class, consisting of about 56,000 Wal-Mart employees in Minnesota. The ruling follows a $172 million jury verdict in California and a $78 million jury verdict in Pennsylvania.

Paul Allen Sues 11 Companies, Including Google and Apple, for Patent Infringement

Billionaire Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, filed suit Friday in federal court against 11 Internet search and e-commerce companies, including Apple, Google and Facebook, alleging that they are using technology developed at his now-shuttered California laboratory, Interval Research Corp. The suit lists alleged violations of four technology patents developed at Interval Research in the 1990s, which cover fundamental Web technologies. The suit does not estimate a damages amount.
