Ballard Spahr Gambles on Las Vegas With New Office

Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll has opened an office in Las Vegas effective Monday with the addition of three new partners. While Ballard Spahr Chairman Arthur Makadon has said he wants to grow it to a 50-person office, some familiar with the Vegas market cautioned that out-of-town firms might have a difficult time expanding. Noting Nevada's "cowboy capitalism," one recruiter says Las Vegas attorneys don't want to be dictated to by large firms that are based outside the region.

Big Firms Growing -- by a Thin 1.5 Percent

The nation's 250 largest law firms continued to grow last year, but just barely. The attorney head count inched up by 1.5 percent, compared with last year's 1.6 percent -- the lowest since 1994.
