Midsize Firms Weigh Salary Cuts

A few years ago, most of California's premium midsize firms lined up to match big firms' top pay for young lawyers. Now, even as some of the biggest firms have begun to slash salaries, many midsize firms claim to be sticking with $160,000 -- though there are some exceptions. As the downturn continues to reshape the legal landscape, leaders at firms like Townsend Townsend and Crew and Jeffer Mangels Butler & Marmaro say they may back off from the top market rate before the year is over.

Just when you thought the bandwagon was packed, another handful of California firms have announced associate salary hikes. Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman became the latest large firm to move first-year pay up to $160,000. And in the midsize camp, Munger, Tolles & Olson boosted first-year pay to the $160,000 level, while Shartsis Friese took its top-billing associates to $165,000. In a prepared statement, Pillsbury said the salary hike won't come at the cost of associates or clients.

According to Thomson Financial, firms with significant M&A practices had a hand in 375 M&A deals last year, a 53 percent plunge from the previous year's 801 deals.
