Sprint Nextel Corp. has agreed to acquire the remaining shares of its affiliate, Nextel Partners, Inc., for $6.5 billion, ending a legal dispute that came about when Sprint Nextel acquired Nextel Communications last year. Also, Tommy Hilfiger Corp., known for its preppy clothes and sportswear, has agreed to be acquired by Apax Partners, a private investment firm, for $1.6 billion.

The Birmingham, Ala., company expects to pay a total of about $147 million in legal fees for litigation expenses incurred since federal prosecutors launched a fraud case against the company and its founder and former CEO in 2003, according to the company's annual report filed last week. That figure does not include salaries paid to the in-house law department.

A New Jersey jury has assessed $2.62 million in damages against Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. and its Swiss parent company in the first of 400 suits to be tried over the acne drug Accutane's propensity to cause inflammatory bowel disease. However, the jury did not award punitive damages under the state's Consumer Fraud Act, because it found insufficient evidence that the manufacturer intentionally failed to warn that the drug can cause IBD.
