Lawyers Fingered in Enron Report
Otis Bilodeauobilodeau@legaltimesWASHINGTON-The first report from the investigator sifting through the Enron Corp.'s finances casts a harsh light on the role that corporate lawyers played in some of the company's exotic business deals. The lawyers in those deals furnished what are known in the arcane world of asset securitization as true sale opinions.Guidelines Set in Historic Bankruptcy Approach
In what has been called a historic moment, upward of 200 attorneys in a New Jersey federal courthouse bore witness to the dawn of a new day in asbestos-related bankruptcies. The event was a case management meeting called by U.S. District Judge Alfred M. Wolin to advise attorneys involved in five major Chapter 11 cases on how they will proceed now that the cases have been transferred to him and consolidated under his purview.Makers of Equal, Splenda Settle
It was high drama at the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia on Friday in the battle between the makers of Equal and Splenda when the jury asked to see the expert reports on damages. Lawyers on both sides knew that probably meant the jury had decided in Equal's favor on liability -- with a verdict saying that Splenda's slogan "made from sugar so it tastes like sugar" is misleading -- and was struggling only with how much money to award. But an 11th hour settlement made the jury's verdict unnecessary. For Congoleum Corp. Chapter 11, Tenth Time May Be the Charm
Congoleum Corp. of Mercerville is poised to file a new Chapter 11 reorganization plan, its 10th in three years, and its chief executive officer says this one may actually do the trick.Pledge of Allegiance Case Heads the High Court's List
The controversial challenge to the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance leads the lengthy list of cases the Supreme Court will consider at its private conference Sept. 29. The latest development in the Pledge cases came Sept. 11, when the challenger, Sacramento atheist Michael Newdow, regained partial legal custody of his daughter, on whose behalf he challenged the wording of the Pledge. The ruling will likely boost the chances the Supreme Court will grant review in his First Amendment challenge.Cigarette Makers Lose Bid To Arbitrate Lower Payouts
Privacy Advocates Target Facebook
A coalition of privacy advocates -- the Electronic Privacy Information Center and nine other groups -- has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, urging it to investigate Facebook's revised privacy settings. The nation's largest social networking site, which has more than 100 million users in the United States, has changed its privacy policy and settings to expand the amount of user information that is publicly available. The coalition says Facebook's policies are unfair and deceptive.Mixture of Growth, Slowdown Is Seen
The growth statistics in the New York Law Journal's 2001 "NYLJ 100" don't reveal the economic repercussions of Sept. 11. Because the data collected is only current through Sept. 30, it doesn't fully reflect the past three recession-filled months, and in many ways offers a snapshot of law firms on the brink. One fact retains its consistency, however, and that is Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom's spot at the top of the list.Trending Stories
