Akerman shareholders flee as pay drops

Akerman Senterfitt has reported a dramatic 30 percent drop in its non-equity shareholders, capping off a difficult year marked by rapid turnover, the embarrassing collapse of a merger and the revelation that the firm missed its budget. Non-equity shareholders also suffered a 15 percent drop in pay. Firm chairman Andrew Smulian attributed most of the drop in non-equity partners to promotions to equity partnership. Akerman ends a sour year on a high note as lead counsel to a merger worth $11B. So, now what?

A highly complex merger project that kept some 100 lawyers at Akerman Senterfitt busy for a year finally ended Friday — unceremoniously. Client conflicts delay merger of Akerman and WolfBlock

The planned merger between Akerman Senterfitt and WolfBlock has been delayed largely due to a conflict between two clients. The boards of both firms approved the merger, which has been in the works for months. Last month, it appeared a done deal. But, in a joint statement, the chairmen of both firms stated that "there are issues under continued discussion in this process and that, among them is a client conflict that cannot be discussed publicly because of client confidentiality." Insiders say the deal is on hold for at least 90 days.

Seven Shareholders Depart Akerman Amid Reports of Growing Pains

Seven Miami shareholders are leaving Akerman Senterfitt, and former and current firm lawyers say they're worried that more departures are on the way due to economic reasons and growing pains. Sources report that the firm trimmed partner pay at the end of last year, and that some associates were taking home more than some partners on a weekly basis due to holdbacks and capital contributions. Others indicated the firm has undergone haphazard growth in an attempt to gain a bigger geographic footprint.
