Filmmakers hire Lathrop for defamation fight with Dole

The producers of a documentary film called "Bananas!" have brought in a bunch of seasoned attorneys from Lathrop & Gage's Los Angeles office to pick apart a defamation lawsuit brought against them by Dole Food Co. The Lathrop legal team is led by Lincoln Bandlow, a First Amendment specialist in Los Angeles, and trial attorney John Shaeffer, partner in charge of the Los Angeles office.

Lathrop & Gage Merges With Small Denver Firm

The 300-lawyer Lathrop & Gage, the oldest law firm west of the Mississippi River, has agreed to merge with Denver firm Kamlet Reichert, according to a report in The Denver Post. According to a statement from Lathrop confirming the merger, the agreement will combine Lathrop's 16-lawyer Denver office -- led by litigation partner Philip Lorenzo -- with 21 lawyers from Kamlet Reichert. Lathrop hopes to increase its corporate and real estate capacity through the Kamlet Reichert merger.

Filmmakers Hire Lathrop for Defamation Fight With Dole

The producers of a documentary film called "Bananas!" have hired Lathrop & Gage to pick apart a defamation lawsuit brought against them by Dole Food Co. Earlier this month, Dole sued the makers of the film, which tells the tale of the first U.S. trial involving claims made by Nicaraguan workers against Dole. The plaintiffs won a 2007 jury trial, but after the film's completion a judge threw out two similar cases against Dole finding the plaintiffs and their lawyers fraudulently falsified key documents.
