A fresh coat of legal arguments for Rhode Island lead paint case

A lawyer for one of the companies accused in a landmark lawsuit by the state of Rhode Island of creating a public nuisance through the manufacture and sale of lead pigment over several decades called the premise behind the case an "abstraction" devoid of specifics during oral arguments before the state's highest court on Thursday. The verdict is the first and only one in the country to hold former lead paint and pigment companies responsible for creating a public nuisance.

With zero fanfare, the Supreme Court has issued new guidelines for one of the least-known parts of its caseload: the original jurisdiction cases in which the Court appoints special masters. Since these cases arrive without a factual record, special masters function as fact-finders, holding hearings and making recommendations.
