Employing unusually strong language, a Manhattan judge has ruled that the family of a once-successful playwright may seek punitive damages against Mount Sinai Hospital for lapses that led to his burial in a common grave at Potter's Field. The ruling last week by Acting Supreme Court Justice Joan B. Carey also allowed the family of Leonard Melfi to seek punitive damages against Mount Sinai on its medical malpractice claims and compensatory damages against Bellevue Hospital for its alleged role in the saga.
