Round Two for Danser's Woes

When Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge William Danser begins his hearing in front of the Commission on Judicial Performance Monday, it will be in a much different setting than his criminal trial. Hyde Denies CJP Charges of Impropriety

Alameda County Judge D. Ronald Hyde did not use his position to help his daughter and his friends in court, according to papers his attorney filed with the Commission on Judicial Performance. In June, the state watchdog agency wrote that the judge brought "the judicial office into disrepute" by abusing his post. Besides helping his daughter, the six-count "notice of formal proceedings" alleged that Hyde made a sexual comment off the bench to court employees.

Judge's Voir Dire Instructions Result in Misconduct Charges

California's Commission on Judicial Performance has filed misconduct charges against a Superior Court judge who told potential jurors to conceal or lie about racial bias they might harbor. Judge Joseph O'Flaherty was charged with willful misconduct, conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice, and improper action. O'Flaherty's attorney says the judge was simply trying "to ensure a fair trial for two minority defendants in a highly Caucasian county."

Findings of Repeated Misconduct Get Judge Bounced Off Bench

Citing a "plethora of misconduct," the California Commission on Judicial Performance on Wednesday booted Monterey County Superior Court Judge Jose Velasquez from the bench. Velasquez committed 46 acts of misconduct between January 2004 and May 2005, ranging from lengthening jail sentences of defendants who questioned his rulings, to forcing unrepresented defendants to choose jail time or diversion programs without telling them they could plead not guilty, the commission found.
