Generics Giant Teva to Buy Barr Pharmaceuticals for $8.9 Billion

Israeli generic drugmaker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. will buy its U.S. rival Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. for $8.9 billion, in cash, stock and the assumption of debt, it said Friday. Teva already holds the mantle of largest generic drugmaker in the world, and the move to acquire Barr increases its reach further with access to the rapidly expanding Central and Eastern European markets. Teva relied on Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Israeli firm Tulchinsky Stern Marciano Ben-Zur Cohen & Co. for legal help.
