Canadian Firms Beginning to Appoint In-House Counsel

Bennett Jones has become the third Canadian firm to appoint an in-house counsel in recent years. Calgary-based corporate attorney Stephen Sibold took on the newly created position. Bennett Jones is following in the footsteps of McCarthy Tetrault and Blake, Cassels & Graydon, which appointed general counsel in 2007 and 2006 respectively. In-house attorneys are still not standard in Canadian firms, but the position is expected to become more widespread in the near future.
