Nation's top firms experience worst year ever for lawyer head count
The nation's largest law firms this year suffered the deepest cuts in their attorney numbers since The National Law Journal, a Daily Report affiliate, began tracking their census figures more than 30 years ago.The total number of attorneys working at the top 250 law firms plunged by 5,259 lawyers. Tribal suit a $2.8 billion problem for Harrah's
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe says a 2000 deal with Park Place Entertainment Corp., now owned by Harrah's, was a sham meant to protect profits at four casinos in Atlantic City, N.J. Members of the tribe sued Park Place for its interference in 2000 and won a $1.8 billion default judgment in a tribal court mainly because Park Place lawyers did not show up. In July, the tribal court affirmed the judgment and tacked on $1 billion in interest. The tribe sued again this summer, this time in U.S. federal court.Trending Stories
