Nation's top firms experience worst year ever for lawyer head count

The nation's largest law firms this year suffered the deepest cuts in their attorney numbers since The National Law Journal, a Daily Report affiliate, began tracking their census figures more than 30 years ago.The total number of attorneys working at the top 250 law firms plunged by 5,259 lawyers. Put another way, it's as if all of the lawyers working at two firms the size of Jones Day vanished in 2009.

Tribal suit a $2.8 billion problem for Harrah's

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe says a 2000 deal with Park Place Entertainment Corp., now owned by Harrah's, was a sham meant to protect profits at four casinos in Atlantic City, N.J. Members of the tribe sued Park Place for its interference in 2000 and won a $1.8 billion default judgment in a tribal court mainly because Park Place lawyers did not show up. In July, the tribal court affirmed the judgment and tacked on $1 billion in interest. The tribe sued again this summer, this time in U.S. federal court.
