Foley Recruit to Expand N.Y. Bankruptcy Practice

Foley & Lardner on Wednesday hired partner Douglas Spelfogel from Baker & Hostetler to head up an expansion of its New York bankruptcy practice. While the bankruptcy boom has been under way for more than a year, Spelfogel said Foley foresees continued growth in the area and plans to make more hires. "Even though there is some talk that we're out of a recession, the credit markets remain tight, and the ramifications are going to likely continue for a while," Spelfogel said.

Sheppard IP Co-Chairman Moves to Foley

Foley & Lardner hired the co-chairman of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton's IP practice on Monday. Amar Thakur, who worked out of Sheppard Mullin's San Diego office, said he was attracted to Foley's larger IP practice. Also, he said Foley had a larger appetite for a specialty he's developed in working with private equity groups who acquire or monetize IP portfolios of established corporations. Thakur said he anticipates being able to generate $5 million to $10 million per year at Foley.
