Gregory Smith has done plenty of mergers and acquisitions deals in recent years, but the one he's doing currently for Emulex Corp. struck some chords. For one thing, Emulex's $310 million acquisition of Vixel Corp. is a cash tender offer. That's a departure from a stock-for-stock merger, which has become Silicon Valley's version of a vanilla M&A deal.
