Federal judge reduces patent damages against Microsoft from $70M to $26M
A California federal judge has cut a jury's $70 million patent infringement verdict for Alcatel-Lucent against Microsoft Corp. to $26.3 million. The ruling follows a remand by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit after rejecting a $358 million verdict against Microsoft in 2009.
Federal Circuit overturns $1.67 billion patent verdict against Abbott Labs
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has overturned a $1.67 billion patent infringement jury verdict that Johnson & Johnson unit Centocor Ortho Biotech Inc. won against Abbott Laboratories in a Texas federal court. The ruling reversed 2009's largest jury verdict, finding the patent at issue to be invalid based on the written-description requirement.Panel vacates its own ruling on $371M award

Intellectual property lawyers on both sides of the border are waiting to see whether Canada will reform its copyright laws by bringing changes many say are similar to existing U.S. laws. The Canadian government introduced proposed changes to the Copyright Act in June and said they are necessary in order to bring the country's copyright laws into the digital age and up to international standards. The Canadian Parliament is expected to vote on the bill in the fall.
