Pa. Sees an Increase in Legal Work for Israeli Companies
A number of Pennsylvania firms have been ramping up their efforts to service Israeli clients that have business opportunities in the United States. Last week class action firm Schiffrin Barroway Topaz & Kessler announced it had entered into a strategic alliance with Israeli-based firm Man-Barak Advocates & Solicitors. Schiffrin Barroway partner Darren Check says recent changes in Israeli law have created opportunities for U.S. firms to do legal work for Israeli companies in Israel and in the United States. The appeals court concluded that plaintiffs didn't have to show they were directly overcharged to claim damages from an alleged scheme requiring private mortgage insurers to pay kickbacks to Countrywide. In three other cases, Barroway makes similar allegations against GMAC, Wells Fargo, and WaMu.
The first shoe dropped for the plaintiffs Sept. 30, when a federal court judge in West Virginia dismissed a derivative suit against the board of the controversial coal company. Worse may be yet to come, when the judge decides a motion for sanctions that alleges Barroway's federal complaint merely copied a since-settled state court suit.
