Baker Botts Opens Beijing Office

Expanding its presence in the hot China market, Baker Botts opened the doors to its new office in Beijing on Thursday, the second Asian office for the Houston-based firm. Partner Libin Zhang will be the resident partner in Beijing; partner John Kuzmik, head of the firm's China practice, expects the office to grow to as many as five lawyers by the end of the year. Associate Bonuses Still Booming, Despite Salary Increase

Although year-end associate bonuses were a little smaller than usual in 2006 at Susman Godfrey, the firm still paid as much as $120,000 in bonus money. "If they aren't pleased, they should check into a mental institution," partner Stephen Susman says of his firm's associates. While many associates took home larger paychecks in 2006 due to new, higher salary scales, a number of firms paid healthy year-end bonuses based not only on billable hours, but also pro bono, business development and civic work.

Texas' largest firms exercised caution when hiring summer associates for 2003. For the second year in a row, most firms reduced the number of summer associates hired. Overall, firm's that responded this year to Texas Lawyer's annual Summer Associates Survey reduced hiring numbers 15.6 percent compared to last year. The firms hired a total of 941 summer associates this year, compared to 1,115 in 2002.
