Ballard Spahr Opens Third New Office in Two Months
Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll has continued its geographic expansion with a third office opening in less than two months. The firm's newest addition, in Bethesda, Md., follows the July 17 opening of a Las Vegas office and the Aug. 1 start for its Phoenix office. The firm's recent expansions are in "hot" legal markets, according to legal consultant Ward Bower. Recently, Philadelphia-based Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll became the latest Eastern U.S. firm to open an office in Los Angeles, snagging four partners in recent months from Baker Hostetler. Lawyers at the firm expect to recruit in areas such as IP and high-stakes employment litigation. "We have almost 600 lawyers, and a quarter of them are in the West," says Chairman Arthur Makadon. Law firms want a piece of the hospitality, real estate, construction, aerospace and electronics industries, but that means some firms with long-standing practices in Phoenix are feeling a pinch from the competition.
