Canadian law firms weathering Wall Street storm — so far

Wall Street's financial troubles are keeping Canadian lawyers busy with inquiries from clients, but several Canadian attorneys said the country has so far weathered the storm that is shaking up the U.S. economy. "Canada's financial system — because of its unique structure — has really managed to weather the storm much better than not just the U.S. but European banks as well," said Ogilvy Renault's Andrew Fleming. Canada has only six major domestic banks and they are not as dependent on the central bank in terms of funding as banks in other countries, Fleming said.
