Manatt Is Second L.A. Firm to Boost Starting Pay to $145K

A year after first-year pay raises swept the Los Angeles market -- and then the nation -- L.A.'s Manatt, Phelps & Phillips is boosting starting salaries to $145,000. The raise makes Manatt the second L.A.-based firm to hit that mark for first-year associates, following an increase in February by Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges. It's too soon to say if Manatt's move will trigger a broader wave of increases. For now, most firms in the area are saying they'll wait and see.

California Bench Isn't Banned From Scouts

California judges who are members of the Boy Scouts of America don't have to leave the organization, the state's high court said, but they'll have to disclose their membership and disqualify themselves from particular cases. Responding to bar groups who raised the appropriateness of judges associating with groups that openly discriminate against gays, the court declined to change the state's judicial ethics codes.

State Bars Protest SEC Rule

The California and Washington state bar groups have told federal securities regulators that lawyers in their states are ethically bound to follow state bar rules prohibiting disclosure of client information. Their stance, in letters to the SEC, is in defiance of new SEC rules that permit corporate attorneys to "report out" civil violations by business clients to the SEC. The letters may be the first volley in a battle that's headed to court.
