Candidates' Priorities Vary in Bar Election

Two are focused on state court budgets. Another is fighting for a stronger female presence on an increasingly male-dominated board. And a fourth continues to pursue a long-held obsession to see all court rulings published and citable as precedent. They are the four candidates for two Bay Area seats in the ongoing elections for the State Bar's Board of Governors, the 23-member group that sets the rules and regulations for California lawyers.

Chicago Firms Raise Associate Salaries to $135,000

Many Chicago law firms are raising salaries for first-years to $135,000. Though some firms cite last year's strong financial performance as a main reason for the pay increases, others say they need to give raises to stay competitive. But Bill Chamberlain, assistant dean for career strategies at Northwestern University's law school, is concerned the higher salaries put pressure on associates to bill more hours.

Calif. Bar Panel Amends Proposal on Malpractice Insurance

A California Bar committee has recommended a significant change to a proposal that would make attorneys tell clients if they don't have malpractice insurance. The committee voted to require written disclosure only when it's "reasonably foreseeable" that a lawyer will represent a client for more than four hours. The amendment seeks to assuage Bar governors' concerns that the original proposal could force attorneys to disclose a lack of insurance during casual social talks or friendly phone calls for advice.
