By a 5-3 vote, the Supreme Court held that pharmaceutical pay-for-delay deals aren't presumptively illegal under antitrust laws, but the government can still try to make a case that individual settlements are anticompetitive. Two state bar groups, one in Washington and the other in California, have told federal securities regulators that lawyers in their states are ethically bound to follow state bar rules prohibiting disclosure of client information. Their stance, in letters in August to the SEC, is in defiance of new rules that permit corporate attorneys to "report out" civil violations by business clients to the SEC in some situations. The letters appear to be the first volley in a battle some say will end up in court.

Rambus is still paying for its decision to shred reams of documents before it launched a litigation campaign against a big swath of the semiconductor industry. The latest blow came on Friday, when the judge most sympathetic to Rambus over the years ruled that the company spoliated evidence and signaled that he would reduce a $397 million judgment that Rambus won against rival SK Hynix in 2009.
