Massey asks justices to overturn $76M judgment
CHARLESTON, W.Va. AP - West Virginia's SupremeCourt should reverse a 2002 judgment against Massey Energy Co. that nears $76 million because a Virginia lawsuit previously addressed the underlying coal contract dispute, a lawyer for the company argued Wednesday.Huntington lawyer D.C. Offutt said the Virginia case, which ended in 2001 with a $6 million judgment in favor of Harman Mining Co.After getting trounced in its trade secrets battle with DuPont, Kolon Industries is having better luck stonewalling a follow-on criminal indictment. But it may only be a matter of time before a judge lets the U.S. Department of Justice go forward with the case.

The 200-attorney Los Angeles-based Irell & Manella has announced associate bonuses that are not only more generous than ones being given by many larger firms, but, for senior associates, represent an increase over last year. The bonuses, ranging from $15,000 for the class of 2008 to $70,000 for the class of 2002, contrast sharply with the bonus scale of $7,500 to $35,000 at other leading firms.
