Police Overtime Lawsuit Proceeds Over 'Donning and Doffing' Claims

What do street cops have in common with people who carve up slaughtered livestock for a living? Plaintiffs lawyers say both must be paid for the time it takes to change into protective clothing and safety gear. California federal Judge Charles Breyer allowed plaintiffs to file an amended complaint this month claiming that the city of Richmond, Calif., violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by not paying its police officers for the time it takes to "don and doff" their uniforms and clean their cars and guns.

Harris Backs Up Fajitagate Criticism

Signaling that she will stand behind campaign criticism of Fajitagate, new San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris on Friday cleared the way for a key figure in the scandal to be absolved. Harris' office didn't put up a fight when Deputy Chief Gregory Suhr -- one of several officers who faced conspiracy to obstruct justice charges, then saw them dismissed for lack of evidence -- asked a San Francisco Superior Court judge to declare him factually innocent.

San Francisco-based Morrison & Foerster is revising its associate compensation structure in 2002 to eliminate the traditional lock-step base pay. It will provide a range of base salaries with individual compensation based on performance. The reaction is mixed. One associate calls it unfair and divisive, while others say it's not "necessarily a bad thing," since compensation would be merit-based.
