District Attorney Candidates Start Lining Up Endorsements
With the San Francisco district attorney's election more than six months away, incumbent Terence Hallinan and challenger Kamala Harris, a deputy city attorney, have already started lining up endorsements of local, state and national politicians. Harris has managed to skim away at least two supporters who backed Hallinan in 1999. Returning challenger Bill Fazio, a solo criminal defense attorney, explained a blank endorsement list by saying it's early in the game and he has just begun soliciting supporters.Ex-Edwards backers drawn to Obama
Correction appended: See below for a correction to this story.THIS TIME AROUND, John Edwards can't take anything for granted. This time, even his blood brothers aren't necessarily on board. For years, Edwards has relied on the support of his fellow trial lawyers' deep pockets to help get him elected-first to the Senate and then three years ago, when he made a run at the White House and then became running mate to Sen.Record Labels Take Offensive to Retool Napster Injunction
The next courtroom battle in the Napster copyright case, scheduled for March 2, will probably focus on an aggressive attempt by the recording industry to shape a federal judge's injunction against the music-swapping service. The hearing comes as talk of settlement has heated up, especially from Napster. But given the recording industry's recent courtroom successes, a settlement appears unlikely.Suit Against Music Search Engine Proceeds
The battle continues between MP3Board.com, a California-based search engine, and the record labels suing it for copyright infringement. A federal judge in New York on Thursday rejected both sides' bids to rule in their favor on summary judgment, forcing the suit a step closer to trial. The case raises the novel issue of whether hyperlinks to pirated material constitute copyright infringement. In FedEx Fee Fight Case, Judge Finds Lawyer Solicited Cash From Clients
Meeting a client at McDonald's to pick up $15,000 in cash has landed San Francisco plaintiffs lawyer Waukeen McCoy in serious trouble. After settling part of a civil rights claim against FedEx, McCoy solicited cash payments from three plaintiffs above and beyond his contractual fees, according to a federal district court judge who previously dismissed McCoy's entire fee application and imposed a $25,000 sanction. The findings are the latest in a long-running fee fight between McCoy, FedEx and other plaintiffs lawyers.Make Sure Your Law Library Is Ready for Anything
Disaster planning is no laughing matter. Like immunizations, it has to be done. The only way for a law firm library to provide support to attorneys following a disaster is to be prepared. Remember that a lot of print documents can't be replaced, but you may need to get permission before you can scan them. If you aren't already doing backups and don't have a library disaster plan in place, drop everything else and get to work. After all, hurricane season begins on June 1.Trending Stories
