U.S. House Committee Asks Texas Firms for Silicosis Suit Info

A U.S. House panel investigating thousands of silicosis claims -- claims based on diagnoses that a federal judge in Texas questioned last year -- is turning its attention to the conduct of lawyers who filed many of those suits. The panel has sent letters to the managing partners at 13 firms to request detailed information on the firms' dealings with the doctors and medical screening companies that diagnosed plaintiffs in the suits as having the disease, which comes from inhaling silica dust.

Enron Mess Gives a Boost to MDP Foes

Last year, 101 firms (there was a three-way tie for No. 99) on Texas Lawyer`s list had a total of 11,051 attorn

Silica Order Could Affect Future Mass Tort Litigation

In an order that could impact future mass tort litigation, a federal judge accused screening companies, doctors and plaintiffs lawyers of being willing participants in a "scheme" involving approximately 10,000 plaintiffs diagnosed with silicosis. Texas Judge Janis Graham Jack, a former nurse, wrote a 249-page scathing rebuke of diagnoses that she said "were driven neither by health nor justice; they were manufactured for money." Jack has presided over pretrial matters for about 120 silicosis cases.

Big Business Turns to Plaintiffs Lawyers for Help

Once seen as a thorn in corporate America's side, plaintiffs attorneys are increasingly helping big businesses fight their battles. Most business-to-business lawsuits used to be handled by full-service or defense-oriented firms with strong ties to business. But the taboo against hiring a plaintiffs lawyer has subsided, mainly due to rising legal fees, which have prompted companies to seek less pricey options, and tort reform, which has forced plaintiffs attorneys to be more creative with their services.
