Caution Pays Off as Top 20 N.J. Firms Stay Profitable
During 2008, a year that saw the national economy petering out, New Jersey's largest firms held their ground in terms of size, revenue and profitability. Continuing a trend of streamlining that was noticeable in 2007, firms in 2008 hired fewer new lawyers. Equity partnerships were also in retrenchment, indicating a circling of wagons to guard profits jealously. At the same time, 28 new nonequity partners were hatched within the top 20 largest New Jersey firms, a 6.2 percent increase over 2007.Carpenter and McElroy Merge in Landmark Deal
After a year of negotiating, Carpenter, Bennett & Morrissey, one of New Jersey's oldest firms, has reached an agreement in principle to combine with one of its fastest-growing, McElroy, Deutsch & Mulvaney, in the largest in-state merger of law firms in state history.Partners for Women and Justice — 2011 Pro Bono Attorneys
Partners for Women and Justice recognizes the following attorneys for their pro bono service during 2011. Their generous support made it possible for Partners to help hundreds of low income and abused women and their children in the past year. These attorneys helped secure final restraining orders, fair orders of spousal/child support, safe visitation/custody arrangements, divorces and wills and related documents. Many of these attorneys made themselves available to provide court representation in these matters, including through our joint program with Rachel Coalition. Others staffed our divorce clinics. On behalf of Partners' staff and trustees and most importantly, the women and children who have been helped, we say "thank you" to all of these attorneys and their firms.Trending Stories
