Small Firms Find Profit in Nonprofits

Gene Takagi has long been interested in nonprofits. As an associate at Sheppard Mullin, he didn't have enough clout to draw large institutional clients, and many organizations couldn't afford his big-firm rates. So Takagi went solo. By slashing his rates from $280 to $150, he went from zero to 60 regular clients. With the number of private charities exploding and their wealth building come stricter regulations -- translating into the need for more counsel, which bodes well for solos and small firms.

At the time, her husband was serving in Vietnam as a swift boat officer, in the same squadron as John Kerry. Eight months later, Keyes' husband died, spurring her to become more active in the anti-war movement. That's where she met Kerry. Keyes, a partner at Morrison & Foerster, is about to attend her second Democratic Convention -- only this time she'll be inside, as a delegate for Kerry.

Harris has managed to skim away at least two supporters who backed Hallinan in 1999. Returning challenger Bill Fazio, a solo criminal defense attorney, explained a blank endorsement list by saying it's early in the game and he has just begun soliciting supporters.
