Cognex Corp., a small Massachusetts high-tech company, has funded an unusual, decade-long court offense against several so-called "patent trolls." In-house counsel Todd Keebaugh estimates that the company has spent roughly $3 million to $4 million in fees fighting one opponent, Acacia Research Corp. With recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings, including this month's Quanta Computer Inc. v. LG Electronics Inc., on their side, more companies may follow suit -- and soon.
