Southern District Judge Jed S. Rakoff, an independent-minded veteran of the federal court, has been assigned the case of attorney Marc S. Dreier, who was indicted Thursday on charges he had defrauded hedge funds and investors of $400 million. Mr. Dreier could spend the rest of his life in jail if convicted of the charges: conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud as well as securities fraud and wire fraud.
