With first-year associate salaries at large law firms converging at $135,000, The Recorder focused its annual associate salary survey on "midsize" players. For many associates, choosing a top-tier national firm or a smaller regional outfit is a matter of balancing personal priorities and professional interests. McDonough, Holland & Allen associate Daniel Wolk was willing to forgo a top salary for the comfort of a smaller firm with lower billable hours: "What McDonough gave me just made more sense."

Silicon Valley Firms Asked To Pony Up for Pro Bono

Silicon Valley firms get a bad rap for their poor record on pro bono. Now they're getting a chance to do something about it. A group of attorneys and legal services agencies launched a campaign to raise $5 million over the next three years. The goal is to get firms to contribute "the equivalent of one billable hour -- pegged at $250 -- for each Silicon Valley-based lawyer for each year of the campaign," says attorney Ian Feinberg.

Patent Lawyers Push Whyte for Federal Circuit

Members of the patent bar are lobbying to get U.S. District Judge Ronald Whyte of San Jose, Calif., appointed to the next opening on the Federal Circuit, which has nationwide jurisdiction over patents, international trade and government contracts. The Federal Circuit has never had a district judge among its ranks, which patent lawyers say is a shortcoming of the court. Though there are no current openings, many lawyers expect one of the judges to take senior status by the end of the year.
