Axe Hangs Over Legal Team as BBC Job Cuts Loom
The BBC's 100-strong legal team could be hit in the broadcasting giant's controversial restructuring, it emerged Thursday. The corporation said that it expected to shed 75 jobs from its professional services arm, which includes the legal, marketing and finance teams, from a total of 1,800 new redundancies. The cuts are part of a controversial restructuring launched by the broadcaster after it failed to secure its target funding in the last license fee negotiations with the government.Six King & Spalding Partners Join McKee Nelson
McKee Nelson has recruited a six-partner litigation group from King & Spalding's New York office. Led by Jeffrey Q. Smith, the group also includes partners Steven G. Brody, Susan F. DiCicco, Scott E. Eckas, Michael M. Gordon and Jennifer Hurley McGay, who are set to start on Monday. In addition, at least 15 associates are expected to move from King & Spalding in the coming weeks. M ayer, Brown & Platt has acquired 250-lawyer London firm Rowe & Maw in the largest American acquisition of a U.K. law firm to date.An appellate court ruled on Thursday that the Federal Aviation Act preempts the state regulation of all airlines. The decision came in a long-running litigation in which major carriers have been accused of conspiring to keep cargo shipping rates artificially high.
