Stock Option Backdate Probe Hits N.J. Firms

A federal investigation into improperly backdated executive stock options has swept up four New Jersey companies -- Medarex Inc., Kos Pharmaceuticals Inc., Ulticom Inc., and DRS Technologies Inc. -- and has spurred a grand jury subpoena and a civil suit against Medarex. The inquiries are part of a nationwide probe by the SEC, and in some cases by the DOJ and IRS, into allegations that more than 100 companies changed stock option grant dates to make them more valuable.
