For its annual survey of managing partners, The American Lawyer asked leaders of Am Law 200 firms how concerned they are about the aging of the bar. Thirty-eight percent say it's a significant management issue. They add that current law firm demographics raise two big questions: how to accommodate boomers who want to keep working and how to ensure a smooth succession to the next generation. And as firms move away from strict retirement regimes, managing partners say flexibility is key.U.S. District Judge Paul Crotty in Manhattan ruled that, to put EMC Mortgage on the hook to repurchase failed loans underlying a mortgage-backed security, Syncora and its lawyers at Patterson Belknap need only show that EMC misrepresented the quality of the loans when the security was issued.
Bingham Still Seeks Growth Binge
Bingham McCutchen is run as close to a corporate model as any Am Law 100 firm. Let the traditionalists cluck, but at Bingham McCutchen it works quite well. With 850 lawyers and offices in 11 cities, Bingham's revenues more than tripled from 1999 to 2003. During that time it rocketed from No. 81 to No. 26 on the Am Law 100 list, the fastest rise of any firm.
