Small Firm Does Big Business With Small Towns

There's a new firm in town that focuses on just that -- towns. The Austin, Texas, firm of Bovey, Akers & Bojorquez, which opened in November 2002, focuses almost exclusively on municipal law. The client base, approximately 99 percent municipalities, is a natural fit for the partners, all three of whom are former Texas Municipal League staff attorneys.

After months of research and preparation, Texas Deputy Solicitor General Lisa Eskow will stand before the U.S. Supreme Court on Feb. 26 to argue that what she terms a "procedural gotcha" should not entitle a state prison inmate to a second trial in his federal civil rights suit against prison medical professionals. Eskow petitioned the high court to settle a conflict in the federal circuits on the validity of a party's post-judgment consent to a trial before a U.S. magistrate judge.

Texas' Locke Liddell & Sapp is facing a lawsuit alleging it aided a client's plan to defraud investors through a Ponzi scheme, in which $26 million went through the Locke Liddell Interest on Lawyers Trust Account -- money the plaintiffs allege wasn't used for legitimate investments. The suit comes five months after Locke Liddell paid $22 million to settle a previous investor fraud suit.
