This past summer, after researching the policies and the makeup of the corporate legal staffs, a national organization chose Rohm and Haas as a legal "employer of choice." Ellen Friedell, the specialty chemical maker's associate general counsel, attributes the law department's recognition partly to its active recruitment and deliberate retention of minority lawyers. For instance, it places classified ads in the local legal newspaper, rather than limiting its applicant pool through headhunters.Duane Morris First-Years 'Likely' to Make $145,000
While an official decision hasn't been made, Duane Morris Chairman Sheldon Bonovitz says an increase in associate salaries in January is "likely." The firm bumped up first-year associate pay to $135,000 this year, and Bonovitz says that could go to $145,000 in January when the firm makes annual salary adjustments. "We're going to be competitive in the marketplace," he says. A going rate of $145,000 is toward the higher end of the Philadelphia market as of this month, when several firms move to that mark.Health Plan Loses in Suit Faulting Eli Lilly's Zyprexa Marketing
A health insurance plan that covers state workers has lost another battle to get pharmaceutical companies to reimburse it for anti-psychotic drugs that were allegedly prescribed without medical necessity. A Philadelphia judge dismissed the two remaining claims the Pennsylvania Employees Benefit Trust Fund had brought against Eli Lilly & Co. over its marketing of Zyprexa on Dec. 10. In dismissing the breach of express warranty claim, the judge said the fund didn't directly receive any express warranties from Eli Lilly.Decker Will Return to Cozen O'Connor as CEO
As predicted, Tad Decker will leave the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to serve as CEO of his former firm, Cozen O'Connor. Decker made the announcement Wednesday, just a few weeks after all of the appeals of slot parlor licenses were upheld by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in the board's favor. Decker worked with recruiters for the last couple of months to determine what his options were. He says he had spoken with a few other law firms, some private-equity companies and one professional sports team.Time for Change at Philadelphia's 'It' Firm
For most of the past decade, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll has been widely viewed as the "it" firm in Philadelphia. That good fortune has been attributed to its stable of high-profile talent, unmatched political connections and reputation for having an excellent quality of life. But change is in the wind, as the firm has decided to shake up its management structure and strategic plan to have more of a bottom-line focus.Fox Rothschild Puts Brakes on First-Year Salary Hikes

When James Rohn recruited former law school classmate Alan P. Novak to open a West Chester office for Conrad O'Brien Gellman & Rohn in 1994, he thought it was an opportunity to capitalize on the growing Chester County business community.Intelligent Design Trial Ends After 40-Day Run
Like the deluge in Genesis, the intelligent design trial in Dover, Pa., ended after 40 days. Attorneys delivered closing arguments Friday in the trial over a statement read to ninth-grade students noting gaps in Darwin's evolution theory and mentioning an "alternative theory" that organisms developed in accordance with a pattern designed by an intelligent agent. Parents charged that the school board violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment when it approved "inherently religious" information.Trending Stories
