Philadelphia Firms May Be Ripe for Mergers

With few out-of-town national firms having Philadelphia addresses, the legal community is debating whether that's about to change, not through new office openings but through big-name mergers. Tired of Street Crime, Federal Judge Returns to Blank Rome

Ballard Spahr Fails to Halt Gender Discrimination Claim

Ballard Spahr has lost its attempt to halt a partner's gender discrimination claim before it began. After trying to internally resolve alleged issues of inequitable pay and the piecemeal removal of her practice, Jane Ennis Sheehan had presented gender discrimination claims and a demand letter to Ballard's chairman. In response, the firm filed an action for declaratory judgment, arguing that it had not violated Sheehan's rights under the Equal Pay Act and had not breached any fiduciary duty.
