Philadelphia's $135,000 starting associate salary bandwagon just got a little more crowded. Hangley Aronchick Segal & Pudlin's board of directors voted last week to raise the firm's entry-level associate salaries from $125,000 to $135,000, effective July 1. The firm appears to be the first in Philadelphia with less than 50 attorneys to offer $135,000 to its associates. The announcement came on the heels of a survey that indicates clients want to be a part of the salary-hike discussions.Bingham McCutchen to Acquire Swidler Berlin
After eyeing the Washington, D.C., market for years, Boston-based Bingham McCutchen plans to acquire the ailing Swidler Berlin, a Bingham spokesman confirmed Thursday. The deal awaits approval by both partnerships, and due diligence is not yet complete, but this week the firms signed a letter of intent. The match would give the 850-lawyer Bingham a substantial Washington presence, more than tripling the firm's 55-lawyer D.C. office. Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott has added nine attorneys to its Philadelphia office from bankruptcy firm Adelman Lavine Gold Schildhorn & Kleban, effectively closing the nearly 60-year-old boutique. The group, which includes three of Adelman Lavine's name shareholders, starts at Eckert Seamans on April 2.
