The unanimous opinion held that by filing a statement under California's Uniform Commercial Code, a party can perfect, or protect, its security interest in material that lacks a federal copyright.

State Bars Protest SEC Rule

The California and Washington state bar groups have told federal securities regulators that lawyers in their states are ethically bound to follow state bar rules prohibiting disclosure of client information. Their stance, in letters to the SEC, is in defiance of new SEC rules that permit corporate attorneys to "report out" civil violations by business clients to the SEC. The letters may be the first volley in a battle that's headed to court.

Four years ago Marvell Semiconductor general counsel Matthew Gloss and two colleagues phoned the legal chief of rival Jasmine Networks. The call went to voicemail, so Gloss left a message and hung up. Or he thought he did.
