High-Speed Case Crashes in High Court

A police officer can terminate a high-speed chase by forcing the suspect off the road when the pursuit threatens the lives of innocent bystanders, the Supreme Court said Monday. In a ruling that could impact the consideration of summary judgment motions in other contexts, Justice Antonin Scalia's majority opinion said an 11th Circuit panel should not have relied on the plaintiff's version of events because it was contradicted by a videotape akin to "a Hollywood-style car chase of the most frightening sort."
