On May 30 William Lerach had written warning missives to two law firms that were acting as co-lead counsel in the massive securities fraud case involving WorldCom, Inc., in the Southern District of New York. In his letters to the lead counsel firms, Lerach warned them that they could be held liable if they put his clients' cases in jeopardy.

Insurance Lawyer Admits to Giving Milberg Weiss Payments to Lead Client

In a plea agreement Monday, L.A. insurance lawyer Richard Purtich admits to taking payments from Milberg Weiss and passing them on to Steven Cooperman, an ophthalmologist who is the lead client in several Milberg Weiss securities class actions. The Milberg investigation began in 1999, when Cooperman told prosecutors he received kickbacks. The case came to a head Thursday, when the firm and two name partners were indicted over an alleged scheme to funnel kickbacks to lead plaintiffs.

Milberg Agrees to Pay $75 Million in Settlement

Federal prosecutors today reached a settlement with class-action law firm Milberg, four of whose former name partners have pleaded guilty in the past year to criminal charges relating to the payment of kickbacks to individual plaintiffs in shareholder cases. The deal calls for the New York-based firm to pay $75 million in fines in exchange for the dropping of criminal charges, that amount is to be paid in installments through 2012.

Judge Rips Milberg on High Fee Proposal

In an order rejecting a securities class action settlement, San Francisco Chief District Judge Vaughn Walker ripped Milberg Weiss for asking for too much money. He also cited the firm's pending criminal charges at length in a discussion about whether the plaintiffs lawyers were really protecting the interests of the class. Walker also questioned whether defense counsel Skadden Arps had an appearance of possible conflict since Skadden is representing Lerach Coughlin in connection with the criminal probes.
