Twenty years ago nursing home suits were not taken very seriously by either the plaintiffs' or defense bars. Nursing home residents are old and frail, and proving that even blatantly inferior care caused their deaths could be tough, lawyers thought. But over time, a handful of lawyers began suing on behalf of the families and estates of individuals who died in nursing homes. And in the past few years, the size of some nursing home verdicts has been striking.
