A Manhattan federal jury found that Michael Carlinsky's client, Brazil's Companhia Siderurgica Nacional steel company, was the rightful owner of a stock holding company estimated to be worth about $300 million. That by itself counts as an impressive win. But those details don't begin to explain why Carlinsky, in a victory e-mail to his partners last Wednesday night, described the case as the most unusual of his 23-year career.

Lawyers at the New York County Lawyers' Association meeting last week expressed concern over the impact of multidisciplinary practice on pro bono work and the accessibility of legal services. Some laywers don't believe the ABA's reccommendation goes far enough in ensuring that all lawyers "have the same special obligation to render voluntary and pro bono publico legal service as lawyers practicing solo or in law firms."

Bush Official Apologizes for Slap at Lawyers for Detainees

A Department of Defense lawyer apologized Wednesday for his comments suggesting that corporations boycott law firms that represent detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. In a letter to The Washington Post, Charles Cully Stimson said the comments, made during a radio interview, "do not reflect my core beliefs." His apology came two days after the Pentagon disavowed his statements, saying they did not represent Defense Department views. The remarks had touched off a salvo of criticism.
